What is increased intestinal permeability?
The intestine has a layer of cells joined by “uniones estrechas” (tight junctions) that acts as a filter: it allows nutrients to pass through and blocks large molecules, bacteria, and antigens. When these junctions relax, molecules that shouldn’t pass through do — and the immune system reacts to them as if they were external threats, generating low-grade systemic inflammation.
Symptoms and connections
Almost universal in autoimmune diseases (Hashimoto’s, lupus, RA). Also associated with fatigue, joint pain, low mood, skin problems, multiple intolerances, and digestive symptoms. Addressing the intestinal barrier is one of the most powerful levers in autoimmunity and chronic inflammation.
How we address permeability
Identify the trigger (gluten, alcohol, prolonged NSAIDs, dysbiosis, chronic stress, infections). Restorative nutritional plan with specific nutrients (glutamine, zinc, omega-3, vitamin D). Reduction of antigenic load during a phase. Progressive reintroduction.
